Oral Surgery Q&A
Will I need anesthesia during oral surgery?
Some oral surgery procedures require anesthesia. Dr. Knight discusses your options for anesthesia, which may include nitrous oxide, lidocaine injections, intravenous sedation, or oral sedation depending on the procedure.
What happens before oral surgery?
Dr. Knight provides pre-surgery instructions depending on the type of procedure you require and whether you require sedation. Common oral surgery preparation includes:
- Stopping smoking for at least 12 hours or more before surgery
- No solid food for six to eight hours before your scheduled surgery
- Wearing loose, comfortable clothing to your oral surgery appointment
- Not wearing contact lenses to surgery
- Not wearing dentures to surgery
- No jewelry
- Skipping makeup, including lipstick and nail polish on surgery day
You may require antibiotics before surgery. Dr. Knight provides any other instructions necessary to prepare you for surgery, including information about taking medications before the appointment. You should have someone drive you to and from your oral surgery appointment, especially if you need sedation.
How long does oral surgery take?
Some oral surgeries are completed in under an hour while other procedures, such as dental implants, are more complex and may take longer or require multiple appointments. Dr. Knight explains how much time your specific oral surgery takes based on the complexity of the procedure required.
What should I expect after oral surgery?
If you are sedated with oral or intravenous sedation for your oral surgery, you remain in the office for about 20 minutes after the procedure until the sedation wears off. Most oral surgery is performed on an out-patient basis and does not require an overnight stay.
Most people receiving oral surgery return to their regular routine within a few hours to one day after the procedure. More complex oral surgeries may require a slightly longer recovery period. Dr. Knight provides detailed after-surgery guidelines for caring for the surgical area and when to schedule follow up appointments.
