What to Expect with a Dental Filling Procedure

What to Expect with a Dental Filling Procedure

Nearly 25% of adults in the United States have at least one untreated cavity. A cavity is a bacterial infection that creates a hole in your tooth, often worsened or triggered by damage to the tooth.

Untreated cavities result in pain and risk destroying the affected tooth and spreading the infection to nearby teeth. Moreover, bacteria can enter your bloodstream, potentially harming your organs and leading to septic shock.

Filling a cavity eliminates the infection, halts its spread, and preserves your tooth.

Tasha M. Knight, DDS, at Knight’s Dental in Decatur, Georgia, has received three years of advanced prosthodontic education as well as special training from the American Dental Association to offer superior fillings when you need treatment for cavities or tooth damage.

What’s a dental filling?

A dental filling uses restorative material to repair and restore teeth damaged by tooth decay, cracks, or fractures. Essentially, it fills the space left after a dentist removes the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth.

Dental fillings are nothing to fear; Knight’s Dental uses the latest technology to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. We can also help you handle dental anxiety, so let us know ahead of time if that’s a concern.

What’s involved in getting a filling?

Here’s what you can expect from a dental filling at Knight’s Dental:

1. Preliminary exam

Dr. Knight examines your tooth with an X-ray to pinpoint the cavity's location and size. An anesthetic may not be necessary in some cases, such as small cavities.

2. Numbing

We first apply a numbing gel to your gums for larger cavities, so you only feel a slight pinch when we inject the anesthetic. Your mouth is numb during the procedure and may remain so for several hours after.

3. Removing tooth decay

Cavity treatment eliminates decay and bacteria to restore the tooth. We create a precise opening using a drill or laser to remove the decayed material. We clean the interior of the opening and disinfect it to eliminate any lingering bacteria.

4. Filling the tooth

After ensuring your cavity or damaged area is clean and free from bacteria, we fill the tooth or repair the damage using dental filling materials. You and Dr. Knight can choose from a variety of materials, including:

Unlike the old metal amalgam fillings that were quite noticeable, today’s materials blend with the color of your teeth. We carefully match the shade to your natural teeth, rendering the fillings almost invisible.

Once we place the filling, we use a blue LED light to harden the material, then polish the tooth.

5. Aftercare

The process of treating and filling a tooth typically lasts around one hour. If your mouth remains numb after the procedure, we provide aftercare instructions. We advise avoiding solid or hard foods to prevent accidentally biting your tongue or cheek.

With the right care, your filling can last many years. If you often grind your teeth, we might suggest a night guard to protect your teeth and fillings for the long run.
